Smarter police cruisers to crack down on crime

Smarter machines, less crime

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the NYPD are in the process of developing new “smart cars,” a prototype of which they have been testing for the past year. The new smart cruiser is evidently part of “dozens” of new projects to integrate the newest technology into crime fighting.

Here it is

So in other words, another terrifyingly intelligent machine. Because, you know, the one thing we really, absolutely need is a cop car that becomes sentient and starts dealing out its own justice against the humans.

Stop judging me, you know it could happen

The new cruiser will feature an infrared monitor that will automatically scan license plate numbers, which will then run through crime databases to see whether the driver has outstanding infractions or if the car was stolen. It also comes with a radiation detector that will relay air contaminant data to the NYPD command center, and a surveillance camera on its dashboard that can send live surveillance video to police headquarters.

Future models will apparently include fingerprint scanners and facial recognition technology, and probably sophisticated AI systems that will eventually take over and join with other machines, like the robot telemarketer and the self-replicating machines, to rule the world.

All is lost

The current non-sentient (at the moment) prototype operates from New York City’s 84th Precinct in Brooklyn Heights, and has been operating for a year now. There’s no timetable for when the NYPD will employ the smart cruiser on a large scale, but the prototype is very much viewed as the “cruiser of the future.”

Just please, let’s not make it a future where we bow under machine overlords while we rally frantically under John Connor. Please and thank you.
