Have you ever thought any variation of the sentence “I would totally exercise, if it didn’t involve moving so much?” If not, we can’t talk because you’re obviously an alien. But if so, you might want to check out this nifty little device revealed at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, which allows you to do literally the laziest form of exercise I think I’ve ever seen.
Intrigued? You should be.
Called the Tao, that teeny gadget can let its user work out from essentially anywhere — your desk, a cramped airplane, on your couch — with minimal movement. By using 50 separate isometric exercises (isometrics is the science of applying pressure), the Tao dilutes exercise down to a game.
It looks like a computer mouse
A game that you can play sitting down. Eating chips, probably.
Evidently, by holding the Tao WellShell — the actual device — between your hands or knees and pushing hard, an internal pressure sensor activates and starts to work and stretch your muscles. I have no idea how. Using this pressure and the accompanying Bluetooth-connected app, the Tao will walk you through one of the 50 exercises, with audible instructions all the way through that regulate the amount of pressure you place on the sensor.
Each “rep” commonly consists of 20 seconds of holding the pressure, with 6-second rest periods in between. You can work on nearly all areas of your body using these isometric exercises, including your abdominals and back.
The accompanying app will walk you through it, log the exercise, and then let you know how many calories were burned during the process. You can even use it to count your steps and monitor your heart rate and sleep habits.
I can’t vouch for the device’s effectiveness, but Tao Wellness plans to launch its namesake device this fall, with a planned price range of anywhere between $200 and $300 dollars!
