‘Smart’ teddy bear uses Wikipedia to answer children’s questions

Toy hooks up to Web via nearby wireless devices

There are plenty of educational toys on the market nowadays, but WikiBear takes it to a whole new level.

WikiBear

The 11-inch-high brown teddy bear features a moving mouth along with a built-in speaker and volume control. Standard fare, I know, but where WikiBear enters a class of its own is that it can wirelessly tap into nearby mobile devices to access the web and search for answers on Wikipedia, for the sole purpose of accurately respond to a child’s question.

The bear hooks up to the device via Bluetooth connectivity, and accesses Wikipedia and other reference sites via a free app. As it answers the child’s question, the bear’s mouth moves, making it a fun interactive toy that’ll never be outdated.

The WikiBear in the video below is still just a prototype, and so it comes across a little buggy. Also, the voice used for the WikiBear is not final, as a new one will be recorded prior to its official release.

WikiBear will be available from Commonwealth Toys in June. A price has not yet been released.
