The new age of Tamagotchis

The popular toy from the 90s is making a comeback

If you were a 90s kid, then you most likely owned at least one Tamagotchi. Users responded to the gadget’s hunger, fatigue, and other needs. Since the device first hit the market in 1996, Tamagotchi has sold over 80 million units. The company is now back with an upgraded Tamagotchi version.

In 2013, a Tamagotchi app for iOS and Android was released where users could virtually care for the pets on their smartphones. It was downloaded over 3 million times by users all over the world since its release.

Tamagotchi debuted its 21st century device at the 2014 International American Toy Fair earlier this week. The new version portrays a person-like character on screen that requires care. From the grainy graphics to the same hardware, the new Tamagotchi looks like its previous models – but with the new edition, users can play with friends. Players can send virtual gifts to one another and send text messages to other Tamagotchi users. Even though the device is not equipped with Wi-Fi, users can transfer data through the device’s sensors when the toys’ backs are bumped together. Users’ Tamagotchi characters can visit other devices, like if your Tamagotchi wants to have a playdate with your friend’s Tamagotchi, the character can move from your screen to the next. This toy sells for $19.99.

On February 26th, the Japanese company will release a Tamagotchi Life Angel app, in an effort to convert Tamagotchi skeptics into Tamagotchi lovers.
