At SXSW, the Trending Vending Lounge appeared where Oreo and MAYA Design teamed up to conceptualize a device that creates different flavors of Oreo cookies based on Internet trends. Visitors at SXSW could select Oreos, using Twitter, to create a customized cookie as part of the Oreo vending machine initiative, “tracking the top trends on Twitter, [where] there is an algorithm that converts those trends into custom cookie flavors and colors, so you get a custom taste experience.” Use #trendingvending on Twitter to check out the cookie-making situation in real time. The “Trending Vending” machine at SXSW is powered by Raspberry Pi technology.
Similarly, MAYA Design’s Oreo-making robot, analyzes all that is trending on Twitter and your personal accounts on your electronic devices (like what you’re listening to on Spotify, your fitness apps, etc), and then prints them immediately to satisfy the person’s craving. With the movement coined “EattheTweet,” the bot then places the completed Oreo cookie on the plate. The flavors and Oreo-constructing materials are stored by the OreoBot in the “lab” that is located in the nearby “fridge.” The flavors mixed can vary depending on current Twitter trends, and new flavors can be concocted by the robot on the spot.
MAYA Design’s overall concept was based on the Robotis Platform format. The robot was created to test its research regarding 3D-printing and ways to robotically manufacture snacks.
On MAYA Design’s Vimeo channel it states, “As part of the Trending Vending research initiative we developed a prototype home version of the system based on the Quantified Snack Markup Language (QSML). This is an experiment from our labs focused on bringing 3D-printing and robotic manufacturing of snacks directly to your kitchen.”
So far, it has not been announced whether or not this robot will actually be for sale in the future.
