0.5 to 8-GHz scopes make more precise measurements

Infiniium S‐Series oscilloscope

For bandwidths up to 8 GHz, Infiniium S‐Series oscilloscopes are said to set a new standard for signal integrity in benchtop measurement. Using the world’s fastest (40 Gsample/s) 10-bit ADC, the S-Series has four times the vertical resolution as traditional 8-bit-converter scopes making for precise viewing of signal detail (vertical scaling fown to 1 mV/div). Coupled with a new low-noise front end, the S-Series delivers an effective number of bits (ENOB) of more than eight – the highest in the industry. (ENOB is a measure of dynamic performance that gives the unvarnished conversion resolution after accounting for noise and distortion.)

The scopes come in bandwidths of 500 MHz, 1, 2, 2.5, 4, 6, or 8 GHz, either in four-channel DSO models or 16-digital-channel MSO models, for a total of 14 new models. Further, the scopes exhibit an extremely flat frequency/magnitude response across their entire bandwidth with sharp roll-off, making for highly clean and comparable measurements. And new time-base technology provides horizontal accuracy of ±75 ppb. (That’s not a typo, folks; it actually is “parts per billion ”!)

Standard memory for each of the four channels is 50 Mpoints/channel (or two channels with 100 Mpoints each when interleaved), which is the deepest in the industry. The scopes’15-in. multitouch capacitive display is the largest in the industry, designed to make it easier to use and to see results. The S-Series’ comprehensive application-specific measurement software is run by a powerful internal motherboard with 8 Gbyte of RAM, to ensure the scope stays responsive in all operating modes. And a solid-state drive is used to speed boot time and increase reliability.
