One bright, ordinary day, the brilliant minds at Zuta Labs had a realization: that the only thing a printer needs in order to work is the ability to independently stamp ink across a page. It doesn’t need to be a giant, problematic machine that’s chained to one location; as long as the thing can turn an ink supply into words and images, it’s a printer.
Zuta Labs acted on this realization by re-imagining the printer, and then putting their version on Kickstarter, and apparently, instead of being something that makes you want to reenact that scene from Office Space:
a printer is supposed to be a pocket-sized ink-squirting Roomba.
Oh my God, I want 200.
Zuta’s Mini Mobile Printer has three main advantages over traditional printers: it’s portable, it’s adorable, and all you have to do to get it to print is tap your smartphone. Simply take the printer out of your bag, place it at the top of a piece of paper—the machine’s unique software and complex motors do the rest. For documents with multiple pages, pick up the printer at the end of the page and place it on the new one.
While Zuta’s innovation only prints 1.2 pages a minute, which is on the slow side, it’s definitely more complex and more user friendly than any printer you’re currently wrestling with at your office or school. A single ink cartridge will last for more than 1,000 pages, and the Mini Mobile should hold a charge long enough for you to print out around 60 pages. The printer will also support Android, iOS, Windows, OS X, and Linux, so there’s really nowhere you won’t be able to use it.
