Image(s) of the Day: You have to see these photos taken by a GameBoy

In 1998, a GameBoy camera add-on feature was released by Nintendo that enabled users to snap pixelated images with their portable gaming console. This camera system with a focal length of ~ 50 mm functioned like a modern app. Not too long ago in 1999, the GameBoy camera earned the worldly prestige from Guinness as the tiniest invented digital camera ever created. Some of these photos look like they were snapped with an iPhone and then loaded through a funky filter. The camera could store up to 30 images at a time and came with a GameBoy printer to produce images on thermal paper when both devices were connected.

These photos were snapped by a photojournalist named David Friedman in the 2000s, who recently uncovered them from his extensive archive. He uploaded them to his blog, Ironic Sans “for posterity.” Even though these images are pixelated and slightly distorted due to the lo-fi technology that was available at the time, they are still amazingly cool. His photos captured grey-scale images of New York City landmarks, pedestrians, transportation, and even a slice of NYC’s famously delicious pizza.
