Oooh, sparkly! What you see before you is chocolate alla Morphotonix, aka the candy of the future. Lausanne-based start-up Morphotonix has managed to find a way to etch edible holograms into candy, without using any stickers, chemical additives, or edible paint.
Their designs are fairly similar to the holograms you can find etched on some credit cards nowadays. Morphotonix uses the same principles to etch microstructures onto their chocolate, which reflect light back to produce a holographic image like sparkles or a pinwheel.
The process itself is fairly simple; first, Morphotonix carves a microscopic design into a metal master mold, which is in turn used to make a plastic master mold. Then, chocolate is poured into said plastic mold, and when it sets, voila!
Morphotonix plans to show off their new holographic candy sometime this week, at the Interpack trade fair in Dusseldorf, Germany. The holograms are completely safe to eat, and so far the company has managed to etch them into several varieties of dark and milk chocolate, though they are still testing.
“We have been testing it with many types of chocolate. Sometimes it works great and sometimes no matter how hard we try it doesn’t mold,” said Morphotonix CEO Veronica Savu on Discovery.
