Before we even begin, there is a very important fact that you need to know: in Melbourne, Australia, a grilled cheese sandwich is known as a “jaffle.” Now that you know that, and have seen the title of this article, perhaps you can guess what the Australian eatery “Jafflechutes” is known for.
(It’s parachuting down grilled cheese sandwiches, by the way. Just in case you didn’t get the answer).
As you can see in the video above, the “world’s first float down eatery” does not merely hand you your order. Oh, no. You order, then go stand outside the window on a little “X,” wait until said window opens, and then catch your jaffle as it is floated gently to you by the attached tiny parachute.
But like any restaurant server, Jafflechutes have their obstacles—wind and trees, for the most part. Building ledges also present something of a quandary. But hey, it still beats actually waiting in line for things.
Jafflechutes has been around in Melbourne for around a year now, but will soon be in North America—starting with New York and Montreal—thanks to a successful crowd-sourcing campaign. The company has not yet revealed exactly where their new restaurants will go, but they plan to use the $5,357 they raised on travel and material expenses, as they hand-make their parachutes. Some of the funds will also go towards ingredients.
I’m not going to lie; it would be pretty great to have a “flying jaffle” for lunch. I appreciate the world we live in.
