The Drift LED light bulb produces warm light that enables users to sleep better due to it being “indistinguishable from incandescent bulbs.” What differentiates this bulb from regular LEDs is that this warmer light does not emit blue hues that make it difficult for people to sleep.
The Drift does not suppress the sleep-producing hormone melatonin as users can hook up the bulb that has a dimming capability that works with your regular at-home light switches. This LED bulb imitates the comforting, warm streaks of light produced from a sunset. The Drift will become less and less bright over the time it generally takes a sun to set — 37 minutes — slowly pulling you into a sound sleep. With an internal microprocessor that responds to the user’s commands, the auto-dimming bulb is ready to use via a socket and a light switch.
This bulb shines for over 30,000 hours and replaces 40-watt incandescent bulbs by only using 7 watts. It emits 520 lumens.
In an interview, Saffron CEO Preston Wily stated, “When we decided to build a self-dimming light bulb, we didn't even consider using the light switch at first. We considered a custom light switch, wireless (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/ZigBee) and even a physical switch on the base of the bulb.” The company wanted to provide a user-friendly system that would be easy to install. Wily explained, “We went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea of using the way people normally interact with lights as our basis for setting the Drift Light.”
The Drift bulb can be preordered for $29 per bulb, or $24 when you purchase 10 bulbs.
