Before there was motion-controlled video games and Bluetooth-enabled controllers with 12 different buttons on them, video games were controlled vis-à-vis a joystick and button.
Now referred to as the “good ol’ days” of gaming, the joys associated with the physical juddering of the joystick and slamming of the buttons are but a distant memory. Swedish design company Love Hulten looked to tap into that bit of nostalgia recently, by creating an elegant looking retro video arcade that is entirely portable.
Referred to as the “R-Kaid-R”, the on-the-go video game system comes with built-in support for MAME and a selection of retro console and computer systems, including Super Nintendo, Atari2600, Neo Geo, and all of the point-and-click adventure games playable in ScummVM.
The wooden box features beautiful brass details all throughout. From a components standpoint, it includes an eight-way joystick, 10 buttons, an eight-inch LCD screen, SD card slot, USB connectivity, 5V rechargeable battery, and a built-in mono speaker. The device runs on a custom-built operating system and comes with the game “Cave Story” pre-installed on its included 16 GB SD card.
A handy feature designed into the box—the joystick can be unscrewed from its slot and used as a handle when the device is folded closed.
Now, with this much care taken into the design of the device, one can assume the R-Kaid-R will have a high price tag tied to it. The good news—that assumption is absolutely correct. Slated to ship in September, those interested in purchasing one of the only-50-being created devices can pre-order it now for $3,400.
If that price doesn’t bother you too much, then you’ll be pleased to know that upon placing your order, you’ll be given the option to choose from one of five different finishes, and opt to go with or without a leather satchel.
