If you love thunder and lightning, but don’t want to be outside during a storm, the Cloud Lamp is definitely something you want for your home.
Designed by Richard Clarkson, the Cloud is supposed to give its owners the audio and visual sensation of thunder and lightning, all from the comfort of the indoors. The lamp contains a hidden sensor that detects movement, and thus generates sounds and flashes accordingly.
As well as its ability to create indoor storms—aside from the actual rain part, which I can’t imagine you’d want anyway—the Cloud can also stream music, change the color of its light flashes, and adjust the brightness of the light according to your mood. The lamp can accomplish all of that because it is, naturally, connected to you via a Bluetooth-compatible device, so you can adjust its settings however you wish.
While the Cloud definitely looks like it would be a fun gadget to have in my house, I will not be ordering it for two reasons: one, because it would scare my dog, and two, because the less expensive version is set to sell at $940. And that’s without all of the additions the full model has.
That model costs $3,360, because it comes with two speakers, a subwoofer and the motion detection, plus a wireless remote and the color-changing lights. Oh, and if you’re willing to shell out an additional $240, it will also come with a satellite hook-up to ramp up the Cloud’s visual effects.
I think I’ll just admire the Cloud from afar.
