The layout of components in a switch mode power supply is a very important stage of the design process. A proper layout saves time during design verification and qualification phases. A power supply design with a proper layout requires smaller EMI filters or fewer filter stages. Many guides and books have been written on proper board layout of circuit boards, some of which are listed in reference section of this paper. In this paper special consideration is given to the proper placement of magnetic devices in high frequency switch mode power supplies. The proper implementation of printed circuit board (PCB) layout guidelines will help speed up design time, improve performance, manufacturability and robustness of the final design.
