Power, wide bandgap materials, and the IoT

Paul O'Shea

You’ve been reading about wide bandgap material such as SiC and GaN for many years (they’ve won Product of the Year awards for Cree in 2007 and EPC in 2010) here and on the pages of Electronic Products Magazine . You will continue to read about the breakthroughs of these technologies because they are game changers for the power industry.

A couple of new reports from Yole talk about both technologies and they conclude that the emergence of new wide bandgap (WBG) technologies (SiC and GaN) will reshape the power electronics industry. They offer higher frequency switching, higher power density, junction temperature, and voltage capabilities.

Power supply growth

The global market for ac/dc and dc/dc markets is set to expand starting this year and continue through 2018 says a report from IHS Technology. The growth rate for 2014 is expected to be a healthy 4.6% and improve on that for 2015 and 2016. The drivers are expected to be power supplies for LEDs, telecom, data communications, and industrial applications. Additionally, networks and data centers fueled by the rise of cloud computing and IoT will expand the need for more power supplies. The market share rankings for 2013 were turbulent, with six of the top 10 manufacturers changing positions and two new companies entering the elite tier. Overall, Delta Electronics retained its position as the world’s largest supplier of merchant power supplies, followed by Emerson and Lite-On. The two suppliers that grew the most in market share in 2013 were Salcomp and Mean Well, whose combined revenue rose more than 30% and added 1.3% to their share of market compared to 2012.
