Image of the Day: World’s smallest game of chess takes up only 487 bytes

Games take up a lot of space on our computers, but here’s one that won’t.

BootChess

BootChess

A digital version of a classic game of chess will only take up 487 bytes on your hard drive now- thanks to Red Sector Inc.. Up until this month when BootChess was released, the smallest game of chess was 1K ZX Chess took up 1024 bytes of computer storage.

Getting a game this small means sacrifice though. Don’t expect any special effects. Instead what you’ll get is basic ASCII which was the most common character coding on the World Wide Web until December 2007 when UTF-8 surpassed it.

BootChess is compatible with Windows, Linux, OS X, DOS, BSD, DOSBox and Bochs.
