USB wall charger captures the keys you’re typing on your Microsoft keyboard

When you look at the “KeySweeper” it looks like an ordinary USB charger plugged into the wall. You might not even give it a second thought. You should.

Hacker Samy Kamkar (notorious for creating the MySpace “Samy” virus)  has developed an Arduino-based device that camouflages as a functioning USB wall charger that wirelessly and sneakily sniffs, decrypts, logs and reports all keystrokes from a Microsoft wireless keyboard in its vicinity.

If you encounter a KeySweeper and pull it out of the wall thinking that will stop its mischief, you are wrong. The KeySweeper continues to operate off of its internal battery and automatically charges once it’s plugged back in.

Keystrokes are sent to the attacker via an optional GSM chip or can be stored on a flash chip and delivered wirelessly when another KeySweeper device comes within range of the original KeySweeper.  Kamkar used a web-based tool to allow for live keystroke monitoring.

The hacking device is capable of sending SMS alerts to the attacker’s phone when a keyword is typed. For example, if someone types the word “bank” on his or her phone, the KeySweeper will send a message out, anticipating that there may be some sensitive bank information provided soon.

The good news is it only targets wireless keyboards. The bad news is it can be created for as low as $10.00 (these chargers are not for sale) allowing almost anyone the ability to steal information from you.

On his website, Kamkar provides a do-it-yourself tutorial.
