If you want to unlock your smartphone you probably type in a password or scan your fingerprint, but Fujitsu is trying to take that method a new level by implementing iris scanning technology which would allow you to unlock your phone with your eye.
Last week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Fujitsu exhibited and demonstrated its prototype.
The company has miniaturized existing iris authentication technology for incorporation into a smartphone as a convenient method of security.
The pattern of an iris is unique to the individual, much like a fingerprint. It also does not change much after the age of two and is difficult to forge.
The pattern is read by shining an infrared LED light on the eye and taking a picture of it with an infrared camera. The pattern is then registered and used to verify machines.

By simply looking at the phone it will unlock, eliminating the trouble of having to use your hands when you have gloves on or just can’t use your fingertip at the moment.
In addition to unlocking smartphones, iris authentication could be used to log into web services without have to input a password, enabling secure access.
Going forward, Fujitsu will also explore applying the technology to fields such as security systems.
