Intel and Micron Technology have reveled flash memory technology that will enable gum stick-sized SSDs with 3.5 Tbytes of storage and standard 2.5-inch SSDs with greater than 10 Tbytes. 3D NAND flash memory uses advanced floating gate technology and goes up instead of shrinking dimensions for three times higher capacity than competing NAND technologies.
3D NAND technology stacks flash cells vertically in 32 layers. Intel is sampling a 256 Gbit MLC version today, to selected customers, and will have a 384 Gbit TLC device later this year, along with production quantities of the 256 Gbit devices. These die fit within a standard flash package. Further specifications were not released at this time.
