If you’ve ever wanted to buy a Tesla, but have found yourself turned off by the $75,000+ price tag, then here’s some good news: Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company has begun selling pre-owned Model S vehicles on its website for more than $10,000 less than the company’s new models.
Used versions of the high-end electric car are now populating the Tesla website alongside new models. Vehicles for sale under this new section are up to two-and-a-half years old, which dates back to when the company first started selling its popular sedan.
One thing to note about these cars: they lack all-wheel drive, which is a feature Tesla introduced back in April.
Still, if you don’t mind a couple of thousand miles on the car’s odometer, and no all-wheel drive, then you can own a Tesla Model S for $63,000 (that’s the cheapest model available at the moment). That price tag is about $12,000 less than the most affordable option for a new vehicle, and it does not take into consideration things like a federal tax credit and state purchase incentive.
Worth noting: with the purchase, Tesla offers its customers a four-year or 50,000 limited warranty on its used cars.
This is the first time Tesla has sold used cars. Where other car manufacturers use independent auto dealers to circulate used cars in and out of the market, Tesla chooses to sell its cars directly to the customer; this allows the company to keep a cut of the sales that would have otherwise gone to the aforementioned auto dealers.
The decision to sell a used Model S should prove profitable for Tesla, not just because it’s another revenue stream, but also because used car seals generally offer higher profit margins.
