Land Rover’s Transparent Trailer technology keeps the rear view clear

Recently there have been an abundance of ideas for eliminating automotive blind spots and avoiding accidents. Many new vehicles are equipped with reversing cameras these days, and we can’t forget about Samsung’s transparent truck that hit the road earlier this year. But now Land Rover got to thinking up a fresh idea to make traveling with a caravan or horse box safer.

The luxury SUV-maker created a concept system that shows drivers what’s behind them as if the rear-window is free from obstructions. And the idea is pretty simple: a camera on the towed object beams images of what’s behind it to a display embedded in the vehicle’s rear-view mirror. Land Rover previously came up with a similar idea that makes hoods transparent, and this is an extension of that.

Better yet, another camera, and a pressure sensitive mat, alerts drivers via SMS or an app if the cargo moves while in transit, and graphic overlays help with reverse parking. But the main focus of the Transparent Trailer, as it’s being called, is on Land Rover’s equestrian set, though the technology could be repurposed for any kind of delicate load, for those of us who cannot afford a pony. With the additional wireless camera, passengers can visually inspect the horse and the insides of the trailer, and drivers can do so when the vehicle is stopped.

As for the mat, it helps ensure that the cargo is loaded evenly, and warns through the infotainment screen when a load shifts or a horse begins moving about abnormally. With the companion app, the driver can keep tabs on his or her belonging while away from the trailer. The system not only monitors movement, but also box temperature, and if the door is being tampered with by the horse or an outsider.
