Images of the Day: A robot waits in line to get an iPhone 6S in Australia

Yes, a robot was waiting in line to purchase a mobile device

On September 24 at the Apple Store in Sydney, Australia, a robot patiently waited in line for an iPhone 6S. Yes, you read that correctly, a robot was waiting in line to buy another robot.

According to Mashable, instead of waiting out in the elements to snag Apple’s latest phone, Sydney resident Lucy Kelly outsourced the frustrating task to a “telepresence robot.” Also named Lucy, the robot was pretty much an iPad on a Segway.

The robot cruised on over to the Apple Store to secure the fourth spot in line at 5 a.m. that Thursday. From the comfort of her own home or office, Kelly supplied the voice and face for the robot, and reportedly told Mashable that her plan was to have the robot buy the iPhone without any physical human interaction, which seemed to be a success.

Courtesy of Kelly’s employer, media agency Atomic 212, Lucy the robot was quite the entertaining publicity stunt. But it wasn't the first time the company showed off one of its bots. According to Kelly, she and her team use them often to demonstrate future technology.

“I wanted to be one of the first people to have the iPhone 6S, but obviously because of work I can't spend two days standing in line waiting for a mobile phone,” said Kelly. “So my boss said 'Just take the robot down, you'll still be able to do your work, but you'll still be waiting in line.'”

What a grand idea.
