Intel makes the basis for the perfect tablet

Early this year, we adorned Intel with the Product of the Year Award for their Core M processor. The Core series (i3, i5, i7) is famous for performance; but now this new one is really low-power, at only 4.5 W. And the performance is still there. We think that’s a big deal because it allows for thin lightweight laptops and tablets without any fan required. The Core M is about 20% slower than a desktop Core i3-3225 CPU that uses 55 W — a very fair trade.

Why Core M? Intel created the Core M to fill a gap in the marketplace. Before its introduction, there was not a solution that delivered high performance within a thin, fanless form factor. The processor package is also about 48% smaller than the last version and the chip's new GPU provides a significant graphics performance jump.

And now there are many tablets, detachables, and laptops available with the Core M. We think that market has huge potential. For one thing, every doctor will be walking around with them very soon. The smaller, lower-profile, and cooler-running motherboards let OEMs design sleek, silent systems less than 9 mm thick. And recently, Intel took the Core M to the 6th generation, using the Skylake platform for even more (2x more) performance.
