3D printers were everywhere at CES 2016, but Polaroid surprised many by diving into the 3D-printing market and unveiling a model of its own. Best known for its instant photo cameras, this company sure knows how to keep up with the times.

Modern with a hint of nostalgia, the device known as the ModelSmart 250S wears the familiar Polaroid coloring, and is equipped with resolution that can be adjusted from 50 to 350 microns. It also packs a Wi-Fi-enabled camera that allows remote-monitoring of projects, the single extruder calibrates itself, and although it's not the fastest with a print speed of between 20 and 100 mm, it sure is respectable. The maximum size of a printed model is 250 x 150 x 150 mm.
The device uses Polaroid’s own 1.75 mm PLA filament that’s available in nine colors, and an additional wood-based filament is also available. Filament cartridges include an integrated smart chip that senses and reports the amount of material remaining in a cartridge.

Transparent, dual-sided adhesive sheets called Z-Axis Sheets are intended to be used with every project. They reportedly make it simple to start and remove what you’re printing. According to the company, the sheets reduce wear and tear on the print head.
Software designed to run on Windows and Mac is also included with the printer, along with Polaroid’s Prep 3D printing software claimed to have you printing an object in as little as three clicks.
Made in partnership with UK inkjet cartridge maker, Environmental Business Products, the fully-assembled ModelSmart 250S will be available to the European market early this year. Currently there is no word on pricing.
