Tech giant Apple is planning to bring its digital assistant, Siri, to its desktop operating system, OS X. The update will reportedly be part of Apple’s next major release, scheduled for the fall of 2016.
Although this isn’t likely the first you’ve heard of Siri finally debuting on the Mac, the original report from 9to5 Mac suggests Apple is very close to showing off a version to the public. Mark Gurman, who penned the article, has a solid track record when it comes to digging up the truest of Apple rumors. According to Gurman, the Mac version of Siri will live in the Menu Bar, where a Siri icon will appear in the top right corner near the Spotlight Search tool. Clicking on the Siri icon will open a “transparent Siri interface” with the colorful waves the company introduced with Siri in iOS 9.
As with Siri on iOS, the Mac version will have hands-free “Hey, Siri,” functionality, which allows you to activate the personal assistant by voice. Voice activation works on the iPhone 6 and 6S (and the Plus models), but on the 6 versions, the phone must be connected to power. Similar to the iPhone 6, Macs will also need to be plugged into power to pick up on the “Hey, Siri” command. According to the report, Siri will get its own keyboard shortcut for easy access.
Odds are that Apple will introduce Siri for Mac this summer at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is where the company typically shows off its latest version of OS X, with a launch following in the fall.
