Multimode flyback controller lowers power consumption for LED lighting designs

The IRS2983S multimode flyback controller IC targets LED applications and can lower component count and reduce operational and standby power consumption. It meets the performance and efficiency demands of mid-range to high-end LED designs and provides a controller solution that meets the needs of interior, outdoor, office and industrial lighting schemes.

The flyback controller incorporates a 600-V high-voltage start-up cell that delivers a fast ‘time-to-light’ of <0.5 s. It eliminates the need for external components for voltage division. The key application of the device is the isolated flyback with CV mode, which opens up design flexibility in other topologies, such as non-isolated flyback with CC/CV, buck, boost, and SEPIC (single ended primary inductor converter). It features a burst mode capability that ensures ultra-low standby power. The device operates from 85 to 305 Vac and incorporates over-voltage and over-current protection as standard. An optimized single-stage PFC/flyback design provides a power factor >0.9 and a THD <20 percent.
