Make your own VR goggles out of Coca-Cola cardboard packaging

Between Coca-Cola and the new McDonald’s VR goggles, large non-media companies are noticing the virtual reality (VR) trend. Coca-Cola has just entered the VR game, and not with videos of the sugary brown soda, but with its own cardboard VR goggles.

The cardboard packaging of 12-packs of Coke products can be folded into VR goggles that can hold your smartphone, similar to how Google Cardboard works. Check out Coca-Cola’s video below for step-by-step instructions.

Fortunately, the creation process is simple. What you’ll need is something sharp to cut the cardboard with, tape for extra structural integrity, and you’ll be set with your own pair of Coke-themed VR goggles. And of course, be sure you have your smartphone handy.

Though the soft drink company doesn’t have an app of its own that can work with the DIY goggles, it’s possible that it sees smartphone VR as a new medium that is void of its advertising, and helping that medium can attract more eyeballs to its products. While VR is still a novelty, people will view immersive content even it is blatant advertising, just because the experience is fresh and interesting. This could very well mean the introduction of a Coca-Cola VR app in the future. Who would have thought?
