As a response to the high demand to capture a full spherical 360-degree VR video effortlessly, Kodak has unveiled the SP360 4K Aerial pack to give users the freedom to create immersive videos anywhere. The moments are captured by simply mounting two action cameras together for a fully spherical video that is both YouTube and Facebook 360 compatible.
With this device, capturing action is no longer from a fixed-perspective; the PixPro SP360 4K camera aims to capture footage that is extra-wide, interactive, and in virtual reality. Aside from being an action cam, the device can withstand two meters of water, is dust and shock-proof, and can work at temperatures down to -10°C. There is a dome lens on top of the small unit – where most action cams restrict the field of view to 120 degrees, but the SP360 4K creates footage with a 235-degree field of view. It features a 12.4-pixel CMOS sensor that can shoot both videos and still shots.
The device also comes equipped with a piece that is unlike any other: a double-sided mount that allows you to join a pair of cameras together, one facing forward and one facing backwards. And because of the wide-angle view of the dome lenses, there’s an overlap between the two perspectives which allows a perfect 360 stitch.
As a result, users get a spherical video that places the viewer in the middle with unlimited viewpoints. The camera is also useful for those who wish to create a 360-degree video that is compatible with VR headsets like the Google Cardboard.
The SP360 isn’t just for shooting 360-degree video. It can be used as a front-facing camera that shoots in 1080p and can be paired with the accompanying Android or iOS app to control the device from up 20 meters away. It even allows you to copy footage to your phone and share it anywhere you get a Wi-Fi signal.
For those who would rather not use their smartphones to control the SP360, it can be done through Kodak’s Wrist Remote Control that comes in the pack. It lets you switch between various panoramic and 360-degree video modes, choose to shoot still images, and trigger filming a new clip. The camera also comes with Kodak’s Stitch Software, available for Mac and Windows, which allows users to put footage quickly together and export it.
Kodak’s SP360 4K camera is already available at retail for $499 for a single unit and accessories, or $899 for the pair that also comes with a mount for shooting in.
