Analog Devices AD9162 12 Gs/s D/A converter aids ultra-high-def TV

Fast 16-bit D/A offers direct RF synthesis at 6 Gs/s

The AD9162 D/A converter represents a breakthrough because it provides the industry’s highest bandwidth and dynamic range to help satisfy demand for higher quality, always-on data, and video streaming. The 16-bit device offers ±2.7 LSB INL and ±1.7 LSB DNL over −40°C to 85°C, with a bandwidth of 2.5 GHz and update rate of 12 Gs/s. This speed exceeds optional future requirements specified by the cable industry’s DOCSIS 3.1 standard by nearly 40%.

The D/A core is based on a quad-switch architecture coupled with a 2× interpolator filter that enables an effective update rate of up to 12 GSPS in some modes. The chip comes in 8 x 8-mm CSP-BGA or 11x 11-mm CSP BGA packages. Available now for $150 ea/1,000.

The converters high dynamic range (−82 dBc SFDR at −167 dBm/Hz NSD) allows designers to synthesize signals across a wide frequency spectrum from direct-to-RF up to 6 GHz. The device features a 2x interpolator (FIR85) that enables configurations for lower data rates and clocking to reduce overall system power and ease filtering requirements.
