Samsung markets its entire S7 line as remarkably durable, specifically in one of its commercials where rapper Lil’ Wayne pours champagne over an S7 Edge. However, Consumer Reports released reports that show the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active failing two water tests.
In the tests, two phones were submerged in a water tank pressurized to 2.12 pounds per square inch, which is the same pressure they would experience at a depth of five feet. Samsung claims that all versions of the S7 meet the IP68 standard for water-resistance, which requires devices to survive submersion in five feet of water for 30 minutes.
During the first test, the phone’s touchscreen died and began to display green lines, while bubbles infiltrated its camera. The second phone’s screen turned on and off every few seconds and had water in both its camera lenses and SIM card slot. After both phones had been dried out, they turned on when plugged in, but neither screen could be read.
These failed tests may not sit well with the athletic and outdoorsy types that the phone targets. The S7 Active includes an underwater camera mode and an “Active” key used for quick access to both activity trackers and an emergency app for sending “SOS” messages. It also comes equipped with a supersized battery and offers an optional camouflage color scheme.
However, of the three S7 line phones, the Active was the only one to fail the water test. Both the standard Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge models prove to be water-resistant.
