Most people prefer a laptop to a tower, largely for the convenience of portability.
Unfortunately, with one convenience comes a sacrifice in performance. Most laptops on the market cannot support popular PC tasks like graphic design, video editing, or even gaming.
This is where “The Wolfe” comes in – it’s an affordable, external device that can hook up to just about any laptop on the market, to support these functions (and more).
A bit more specifically, The Wolf is a desktop GPU that plugs into the laptop via Thunderbolt 2 or 3 to alleviate the computer’s responsibilities when it comes to performing graphic-heavy tasks.
There are two iterations of “The Wolfe”:
• The Wolfe contains an NVIDIA GTX 950 GPU — 768 cores operating at 1024MHz, for a peak compute power of 1.57 TeraFLOPS. Delivers a visual experience of approximately 50 frames per second.
• The Wolfe Pro runs on an NVIDIA GTX 970 GPU — 1664 cores operating at 1050MHz, for a peak compute power of 3.49 TeraFLOPS. Delivers a visual experience of approximately 70 frames per second.
For those familiar with NVIDIA’s GPU line, the makers of The Wolfe note that backers who select The Wolfe Pro will likely receive a device outfitted with NVIDIA’s GTX 1060 instead, so as to ensure they are receiving the most up-to-date, and best performing, Wolfe Pro available.
Once it’s hooked up, The Wolfe will provide its user with up to five times the graphical power than a typical, modern laptop; The Wolfe Pro provides a ten-fold increase in performance.
Clearly, the makers behind The Wolfe have identified a long-sought need and created a much-desired solution. At the time this article is published, they’ve surpassed the $150,000 benchmark, three times their goal amount, in approximately 24 hours after launching the campaign.
How well it actually performs remains to be seen – expected delivery of The Wolfe to its Kickstarter backers is expected to be in March 2017.
