Excelsys 600-W fanless power supply targets medical, industrial needs

Excelsys Technologies announces the CoolX600 series of convection-cooled modular power supplies that deliver 600-W output power with fanless, natural convection cooling up to 40°C ambient, with no derating. Designed to meet both medical and industrial global safety specifications at 5,000-m altitude, the power supply series exceeds 93% efficiency even in harsh, remote applications that can be subject to input voltage line surge disturbances of up to 300 Vac. The supplies offer input surge protection of 4 kV and reverse energy protection without using blocking diodes. They also provide a 25-W standby power output to provide another output for system intelligence, cooling fans, and displays.

There are several competitive 600-W power supplies with fans, some with temperature-controlled fans that are not on all of the time. However, there are only a few that can provide 600-W with no fan because that means that they need to be highly efficient (usually about 93% to 94% efficiency). For example, the LCC600 power supply from Artesyn offers similar specs for fanless power, but the main difference is the warranty. The Excelsys unit provides a five-year warranty, compared to two years for the Artesyn model. Another 600-W fanless supply from Mean Well has similar specs, but it has a much larger footprint. The CoolX600 series is offered in an 8.5 x 4.5-in. x 1U package, while the Mean Well product is larger at 11.02 x 5.67 x 1.91 in.

The supplies are field-configurable, allowing customers to configure and reconfigure without voiding warranty or affecting safety. They feature leakage current of < 300 μA and full safety certifications to UL/EN60950 and UL/EN60601 for industrial and medical applications. Medical certifications include IEC60601-1-2 4th edition (EMC), BF (Body Floating) rating, dual fusing, and 2 x MOPP. For industrial certifications, they include EN60950, EN62386-1, ISO9000, and SEMI F47, and for defense and aerospace applications, they include MIL810G- and MIL461-certified and CE101/102. Typical medical applications for the series include clinical diagnostic equipment, medical lasers, dialysis equipment, radiological imaging, and surgical robotics and clinical chemistry. Industrial applications include test and measurement, industrial machines, automation equipment, printing, telecommunications, and audio equipment. For more information: www.excelsys.com
