Timed to coincide with the first U.S. Presidential Debate on Monday, Sept. 26, Brooklyn, NY-based Spotfund Technologies has launched a “Politics feed” for its Spotfund iOS app, a mobile-first micro-donation platform. The app was launched this summer with the idea of giving next-generation philanthropists an easy-to-use mobile app to contribute to organizations.
The feed will allow users to donate $1, $2, or $3 to the U.S. presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, as well as the three third party candidates who are listed on more than 20 state ballots: Gary Johnson (Libertarian Party), Dr. Jill Stein (Green Party), and Darrell Castle (Constitution Party). According to Spotfund Technologies CEO and co-founder Sanford Kunkel, “Impulsively donating to a presidential candidate has been almost impossible for the everyday person until now,” also noting that, “This year, Bernie Sanders showed how small donations can transform political fundraising. By giving our users the ability to donate with $1, $2, or $3, we’re taking the next step and truly bringing democracy to the 2016 presidential race.”
How Spotfund works
To make a donation using Spotfund, all users need to do, once the app is launched and they’ve logged in with Facebook, is select the candidate they wish to fund and drag and drop a $1, $2, or $3 token that appears at the bottom of the app page onto the candidate's “story.” The app then requests credit card data. Once the initial token donation has been made, a user can make an additional anonymous donation. The app also makes it easy to share the fact that you’ve made a donation with your social network through platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
A user’s Spotfund Score increases with each dollar donated — and with each dollar donated as a result of sharing. For instance, if a user donates $1 to a cause and shares it with a friend who donates $3, the user earns a total of four points. It’s also possible for users to create their own stories on Spotfund to solicit donations for their causes.
For now, Spotfund is only available for iOS devices, and can be downloaded for free from Apple’s App Store.
