Samsung is on fire: Galaxy Note 2 explodes on a plane

A Galaxy Note 2 caught fire mid-air on a Singapore-Chennai IndiGo flight

If you’ve been paying just a little bit of attention to the news these past few weeks, you know that things have not been going well for Samsung. After investigating cases of Galaxy Note 7 phones catching fire and destroying people’s cars, Samsung and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an official recall for one million of the phones in the U.S.

But the sparks aren’t done flying yet. Recently, an IndiGo flight was headed to Chennai from Singapore when a passenger’s Samsung Galaxy Note 2 caught fire. Fortunately, the plane landed safely and nobody onboard was injured.

It all began when passengers on the flight reportedly noticed a smoky smell in the cabin and alerted the crew, who identified smoke coming from an overhead bin and quickly relocated nearby passengers to other seats. According to The Hindu , the crew found a burning Galaxy Note 2 and used a fire extinguisher to douse the fire. The device was then transferred to a container filled with water in the lavatory.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 smartphone, released in 2012, uses a replaceable battery. Currently the company and local authorities are investigating whether there were any external factors involved in the fire.

After the commotion, the aircraft made a smooth landing and all passengers were deplaned as per normal procedure. According to IndiGo, it voluntarily informed the DGCA of the incident. In a statement, the airline said they are “thankful to its passengers for their vigilance and cooperation” extended to the crew.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation, a government body which oversees airworthiness standards and safety operations, will be issuing an advisory to all the airlines telling passengers to avoid using any Galaxy Note-series of smartphone, or switch them off while in flight.

With another model of Samsung devices exploding, more questions are sure to be raised regarding all of the tech giant’s devices.
