Listen to these obsolete gadgets play ‘House of the Rising Sun’

Video uses old machines as instruments with no audio effects whatsoever

Behold the power of the Internet – an archive for the world, and a resource for the weird. This week’s fun discovery comes from YouTuber BD594, who created an amazing rendition of the 1964 song, “The House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals using old machines as instruments:

The machines used (and the instruments they represented) include:

• HP Scanjet 3P, Adaptec SCSI card, and a computer powered by Ubuntu v9.10 OS as the vocals

• Atari 800XL, along with an EiCO Oscilloscope, served as the organ

• Texas instrument Ti-99/4A with a Tektronix Oscilloscope, together served as guitar for the song

• Hard-drive powered by a PiC16F84A microcontroller acted both as the the bass drum and cymbal

Old tools playing house of the rising sun

Of course, there are plenty of song renditions on the internet which use tools as instruments. Take, for instance, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, done using older model computers:

BD594 produced both videos, five and seven years ago, respectively.

He’s continued to update his YouTube Channel over the years, and it’s now a library of fun and interesting technology-related clips worth checking out.
