World’s first pizza drone delivery made in New Zealand

Domino’s was the first company to use an unmanned aerial device to deliver two pies.

The world’s first pizza drone delivery was made Wednesday, November 16, 2016, by New Zealand fast food giant Domino’s in an effort to grab a potentially popular market.

The company used an unmanned aerial vehicle to deliver two pizzas to a customer at Whangaparaoa, which is north of Auckland. Don Meij, Domino’s CEO, noted that drones are set to become a primary part of pizza deliveries.

“They can avoid traffic congestion and traffic lights, and safely reduce the delivery time and distance by traveling directly to customers' homes,” he said. “This is the future. Today's successful delivery was an important proof of this concept.”

Domino’s partnered with UAV delivery service Flirtey to ensure future transportation of the pizzas. Tests are set to continue at Whangaparaoa this week, with a goal set to expand the delivery area by 2017.

For now, if you live within 1.5 kilometers of the Whangaparaoa store, you can participate in the pilot program. But it may be a while before the company announces any plans to bring drone delivery to the United States. Flirtey states it is working on it. However, U.S. drone standards are rather strict.
