Apple may have started the era of capacitive touchscreen smartphones, but more recently, its display technology has lagged behind. Smartphone makers like Samsung, who use AMOLED panels, surpass Apple’s LCDs, but Apple is planning to catch up with the iPhone 8 as it’s rumored to be equipped with a curved OLED display.
As Apple prepares for the iPhone 8, component suppliers are stocking up on OLED parts. More specifically, reports state that Interflex, BH, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics will be used by Samsung Display to manufacture the panels to be placed in the iPhone 8.
Samsung’s Display manufacturing provides the most high-quality AMOLED panels we have seen in recent years. Alternative designs from companies like LG are still behind. And compared to an LCD, Samsung’s latest AMOLED panels have a higher maximum brightness, as well as richer, more accurate colors. Additionally, AMOLED screens have quicker refresh rates and produce light from the pixels themselves, meaning no LED backlight assembly is needed.
Regarding the curved aspect of the display, OLED panels are naturally flexible, so why not add them to the iPhone 8? Before its ultimate demise, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was only available with a curved display. Samsung has seen significantly higher sales of the curved versions of its Galaxy S phones. While there may be no true functional reason to have a curved display, it creates an aesthetically pleasing design.
The iPhone 8 may also have a fingerprint reader and home button embedded in the display itself. More leaks are expected to surface over the summer as early test devices are unveiled.
