6 tech skills to help you earn more money in 2017

From cloud distribution to cybersecurity, let’s look at the six most desired tech skills.

If you’re looking to make more money in 2017, you need to be fluent in the six major tech skills. If you’re not, there is no better time to learn. Let’s take a look at the most desired tech skills:

1. Data science

Big data is taking precedence over the industry right now. Companies are searching for employees who can take large amounts of information and analyze it for insights. As for factual skills to learn right now, R is the choice for statistical analysis and visualization. Salaries for R-related jobs have increased 9.7% over the last year. SAS is another helpful skill to learn for analytics. Additionally, being familiar with Cassandra databases proves useful as well.

2. Cloud and distributed computing

On-device software and storage may not be outdated just yet, but it is approaching as more computing processes begin to take place on the cloud. Several companies, in fact, prefer distributed computing, which allows multiple computers to network with each other and solve a task. The skills involved in cloud computing and distributed computing are related and often grouped together.

To have a thorough understanding, you should learn SQL for database management; programming languages such as Ruby, JavaScript, and Python to build cloud-based applications; and DevOps (a popular software development system). Specific in-demand programs include Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

3. Data visualization

Data visualization goes hand in hand with analytics and other data skills. Once data is collected, it needs to be organized and presented in a way that everyone understands. This usually involves using diagrams, text, and symbols to create “data models” that display how data is connected to each other. Essentially, it’s an art and science skill involving breaking down complex concepts into easily understood visual communication.

4. Mobile development

Smartphone and tablet usage only continues to grow as time passes. Mobile development — building mobile apps for iOS and Android — is in high demand as companies continue to implement apps and mobile-friendly websites allowing customers to access content on the go.

Primary skills include cross-platform development so that apps can be launched from different types of devices, UX and UI knowledge, and familiarity with agile methodologies that are common in the mobile app industry.

5. User interface design

User interface design is essential for apps, programs, and websites. Regarding the part of a product that users see and interact with, the design needs to be modern, intuitive, and have an efficient user experience.

A UI expert anticipates user needs, analyzes audiences and the tasks required to be complete, and creates and refines prototypes. Desired skills include front-end web development, CSS, graphic design, and soft skills, including communication.

6. Cybersecurity

Without systems in place to prevent security breaches that lead to information stolen, a company will lose the customer’s trust. Therefore, cybersecurity is one of those “evergreen” skills essential in any business. To understand cybersecurity to the fullest, you should pursue programming and software development information, knowledge of firewalls, proficiency in script languages, and extensive familiarity of networks and operating systems.
