C&K has released a family of space-grade D-subminiature surface-mount termination (SMT) connectors under the CS-FR053 specification. These connectors target aerospace applications including communication and network ports for satellites, spacecraft, and launchers.
Designed to save board space and weight, two critical features in military avionics applications, the connectors do not require plated holes to be drilled into the printed circuit board (PCB) — thanks to the SMT terminations — and they allow one side of the PCB to be used by other components, which reduces the overall footprint and weight.
In addition, with a machined aluminum shell constructed from a single part, these connectors deliver a smaller form factor than a traditional six-part copper-alloy stamped shell. As a result, the connectors can weigh as much as 50% less than standard through-hole technology connectors while also delivering better dimensional capability, said C&K.
The product line complies with European Space Agency (ESA) standards and is qualified to the ESA/European Space Components Coordination code 3401. The line is offered in a number of layouts, which will serve the majority of mounting configurations.
