Smart BLDC motor delivers closed-loop field-oriented control

Trinamic’s first family of smart BLDC motors with field-oriented control

By Gina Roos, editor-in-chief

TRINAMIC Motion Control GmbH & Co. KG launched its first family of smart brushless DC (BLDC) motors with field-oriented control (FOC). The new additions to the company’s PANdrive product family of stepper motors with integrated driver and bus interface is designed for 4,000-RPM nominal velocity and 6.25-Ncm to 18.5-Ncm rated holding torque.

Featuring a CAN bus interface, the new PD42-x-1670  line is the company’s first BLDC servo PANdrive with FOC. The 42-mm flange-sized BLDC motors, available in three different lengths, feature an integrated Hall sensor for closed-loop FOC-based operation. The Hall-based rotary feedback system delivers reliability and durability, said the company.

Key features:

  • PANdrive smart BLDC motor
  • Supply voltage: 10 to 28 VDC
  • 5.2-A RMS
  • 4,000 RPM
  • CAN bus interface
  • TMCL or CANopen protocol
  • Integrated encoder (Hall sensor)
  • FOC based + SVPWM

The BLDC motors are available with two firmware options for Trinamic Motion Control Language (TMCL) and CANopen protocols. Parameters can be permanently stored on the board while the PANdrive handles the time-critical operations such as ramp calculations. The motors are suitable for lab automation, factory automation, manufacturing, robotics, and CNC applications.

With industry-standard protocols, the BLDC motors can be easily integrated in PLC environments or in standalone applications. The drive operates with a 24-V power supply.

The PD42-x-1670 family will be available in March through Trinamic’s distribution channels.
