Debug probe speeds STM32 MCU app development

Simple, fast, and inexpensive, the new STLINK-V3MINI probe for STM32 microcontrollers also supports enhanced features

By Carolyn Mathas, contributing writer

STMicroelectronics has announced a new debug probe, the STLINK-V3MINI, that enables faster programming, ease of use, and affordability. The probe combines the features of STLINK-V3SET, a modular standalone debugging and programming probe for the STM8 and STM32 microcontrollers, with standalone simplicity.

The probe can be used to upload and debug applications on STM32 microcontrollers from anywhere, leveraging ST’s 14-pin STDC14 debug cable. It provides support for enhanced features such as Virtual COM Port (VCP) for added convenience and flexibility and mass-storage support to upload files directly through the probe using a simple drag and drop. This enables the easy observation of runtime data on the host PC for faster and clearer debugging. Reference files for 3D printing are also provided so that users can create their own customized casing for the probe.

The STLINK-V3MINI is a standalone debugging and programming mini probe for STM32 microcontrollers.

Additional features include:

  • Approximately 15 × 30-mm high-density integration PCB
  • 1.27-mm pitch STDC14 debug connector and STDC14-to-STDC14 flat cable
  • Self-powered through a Micro-B USB connector
  • USB 2.0 high-speed compatible interface
  • Direct firmware update (DFU) support

The STLINK-V3MINI is compatible with the STM32CubeProgrammer and provides direct support for popular commercial IDEs such as Keil MDK-ARM, IAR EWARM, and GCC-based IDEs, including ST’s free STM32CubeIDE. ST provides free access to the probe’s low-level APIs for integration of the STLINK-V3MINI in custom test platforms.

Priced at $9.75, the debug probe is available now from STMicroelectronics or from distributors.
