NXP claims first in-vehicle multi-device wireless charging

NXP’s MWCT wireless charging solution, based on the Qi standard, can wirelessly charge two mobile devices simultaneously at up to 2×15 watts in vehicles.

NXP Semiconductors N.V. has claimed the first multi-device vehicle wireless charging solution driven by a single MWCT controller. Meeting the new 15-watt (W) wireless power standard for faster charging, the MWCT device can simultaneously charge two devices wirelessly in a vehicle through one console. Based the Qi standard, it supports all Qi-enabled phones, including iPhone, Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi.

While making this much easier for consumers to charge their devices on the go, for car makers, this means a lower cost and physical footprint for device charging.

NXP wireless charging in-vehicleThe new MWCT family includes both a hardware and software solution with NXP’s Qi library. A key component is the MWCT2xx3A 15-W wireless charging transmitter ICs for automotive applications. These devices support up to two digital demodulation modules to reduce external components required, up to two FSK modulation modules for two-way communication, Qi state machine for charging two phones simultaneously, and ultra-low standby power mode.

The MWCT series is powered by a NXP’s hybrid digital signal controller (DSC) core with dedicated peripherals that enable the two Qi protocols to run in parallel in a single MWCT controller. The solution also includes new patented technologies, such as Clean EMC (CEMC) that delivers improved electromagnetic compatibility performance, which is required for CISPR 25 Class 5 in 15-W systems. These features reduce the overall system bill of materials, according to NXP.

The series also offers optional NFC for convenience features such as BLE/Wi-Fi pairing, smart car access with NFC, in-car purchases, and NFC card damage protection. The production-ready MWCT controller family can be implemented via available software and hardware design files.
