High-speed ADCs target harsh, high-temp applications

Microchip has developed high-speed ADCs with extended-temperature operation for harsh applications, including military/aerospace, industrial and automotive.

Microchip Technology Inc. has released a new family of high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) that operate over an extended temperature range, targeting military/aerospace, industrial, and automotive applications. The MCP37Dx1-80 family of high-speed ADCs is the company’s second pipelined ADC offering. It also is the first to combine 80 megasamples per second (MSPS) in a choice of 12-, 14- and 16-bit resolutions, integrated digital features, and qualification to a higher temperature range, including Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) Q100.

Microchip high-speed ADCsThe MCP37Dx1-80 family joins Microchip’s 200 MSPS ADCs to expand its offering into a broader range of systems. Suitable for a range of applications that require a high level of reliability, the MCP37Dx1-80 ADCs  operates over a temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, and is one of only a few high-speed ADCs that are qualified to AEC-Q100 grade 1 standards. This makes them suited for demanding applications such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, and test and measurement equipment.

The ADCs incorporate digital features that eliminate external components and reduce microcontroller post-processing. These include decimation filters that improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), while a digital down-converter (DDC) supports communication designs and a noise-shaping requantizer in the 12-bit ADCs improves accuracy and performance.

The ADCs, housed in 8 x 8 mm, 121-pin ball grid array (BGA) packages with a 0.65-mm pitch, also include built-in reference decoupling capacitors to further reduce cost and overall footprint by eliminating the need for external bypass capacitors, said Microchip.

The 12-bit MCP37D11-80, 14-bit MCP37D21-80, and 16-bit MCP37D31-80 ADCs are available for volume production. They are priced at $17.45, $29.87 and $40.42 each, respectively, in quantities of 10,000. Evaluation boards with GUI and firmware are available for the three devices.
