Chip ferrite beads operate up to 175°C for automotive

Murata claims the first chip ferrite beads that operate up to 175°C for automotive applications, including engine and transmission ECUs.

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has claimed the industry’s first chip ferrite beads that operate up to 175°C for automotive applications. The BLM18KN_EH series of chip ferrite beads are used for noise suppression in power lines. Target applications include automotive equipment such as engine and transmission electronic control units (ECUs) and turbo motor controllers.

Murata chip ferrite beads for automotive applicationsAutomotive designers have not been able to directly address power line noise suppression due to the ferrite bead’s loss of magnetic properties at high temperatures, and instead have had to implement the devices in cooler areas, making the design more complex, according to Murata.

The BLM18KN_EH series of chip ferrite beads solves this design challenge by meeting the AEC-Q200 standard for use up to 175°C thanks to its ferrite material and electrode that suppresses temperature-related deterioration, said Murata. The devices also provides low DC resistance, which reduces the heat generated, thus increasing efficiency.

The chip ferrite bead series is available in a 0603 package size with dimensions down to 1.6 x 0.8 mm. The operating temperature range is 55℃ to 175℃. The rated current ranges from 740 mA to 4,000 mA (over the temperature range of -55°C to 125°C), 490 mA to 2,600 mA (at 150°C) and 10 mA (at 175°C). Typical impedance at 100 MHz ranges from 26 Ω to 1000 Ω.
