Silanna Semiconductor has claimed a 30-W USB-PD charger reference design that achieves 21.6 W/inch3 uncased power density using an all-silicon design for a universal input AC/DC power adapter. The reference design is based on the company’s SZ1100 active clamp flyback controller (ACF).
The SZ1110 ACF PWM controller was introduced in April 2020 and is currently released as engineering samples. The SZ1110 is designed for up to 33-W output power, including USB-PD and Quick Charge applications. SZ1110-based AC/DC power supplies meet the DoE and CoC efficiency and no-load standby power requirements, according to the company.
The 30-W USB-PD reference design, supporting 5 V/3 A, 9 V/3 A, 15 V/2 A and 20 V/1.5 A output voltages, targets a wide range of consumer power adapter applications. The reference design achieves 20% higher energy density from an all-silicon design compared to GaN-based products, while keeping the bill of materials (BOM) costs low, said Silanna.
The SZ1110 devices integrate an adaptive digital PWM controller as well as an ultra-high-voltage (UHV) active clamp FET, active clamp gate driver, and startup regulator. The high integration of the SZ1110 ACF controllers contribute to the lower BOM costs and high efficiency designs, making them suitable for mobile phones, tablets, and other portable electronic devices, said Silanna.
The company also released an all-silicon 65-W USB-PD charger reference design with >94% efficiency, achieving 30 W/inch3 uncased power density for a universal input AC/DC power adapter. This design is based on its new SZ1130 ACF controllers that offer the same high integration as the SZ1110. Also targeting a range of consumer power adapter applications, the reference design supports 5 V/3 A, 9 V/3 A, 15 V/3 A, and 20 V/ 3.25 A output voltages.
Sample information and live demonstrations are available at Silanna’s website. Reference design information is also available for Silanna’s older SZ1101 and SZ1105 ACF controllers.
