Bourns Inc. has introduced its Model GDT25 series of gas discharge tubes (GDTs) that offers a 40% improvement in standard surge current ratings compared to the company’s existing models. The company also released a GDT25 design kit for prototype testing that contains five parts of each GDT25 model.
Specific GDT25 models are available in several voltages that exceed the industry-standard lightning surge current rating of 5kA for a 5-mm surface-mount GDT. Examples include ratings of 7 kA, 8/20 surge and 7-A AC with one second power cross.

The new GDTs were designed using the company’s proprietary advanced computer simulation techniques and offer maximum impulse voltage limiting specifications, said Bourns. In addition, the enhanced level of protection with tighter voltage limiting provided during fast-rising events should reduce stress on downstream components compared to current standard GDT designs, added the company.
These features enable the gas discharge tubes to offer higher protection against induced voltage transients such as lightning and AC induction. They also offer an extended operating temperature range of -55 °C to 125 °C and are RoHS compliant.
Bourns also noted that the GDTs offer high performance across a wide temperature range, low capacitance, and low insertion loss making them suitable for protecting high-speed information and communication technology (ICT) equipment such as set top boxes, Ethernet, DSL, and G.Fast-based applications.
