Bourns adds high-temperature rated PPTC resettable fuse line

Bourns has added a PPTC resettable fuse model series with a 125°C rating and a hold current range of up to 1.75 A.

With increasing electronic content in vehicles and connected devices that require more robust overcurrent protection that supports higher ambient operating temperatures, Bourns, Inc. has expanded its Multifuse polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuse product line with a new high-temperature rated model series. The new  Multifuse MF-MSHT models are available in a standard 1812 surface-mount package. This PPTC resettable fuse series features a low thermal derating factor, a maximum voltage range of 9 V to 42 V, and a hold current range of 200 mA to 1.75 A.

The automotive-grade AEC-Q200 compliant Multifuse MF-MSHT model family is designed to provide overcurrent protection with a reduced risk of generating nuisance tripping at elevated temperatures up to 125°C in applications such as vehicles, connected industrial devices, and consumer IoT-based appliances.  The operating temperature range is -40°C to 125°C. These PPTCs give designers a wider selection of overcurrent protection solutions that help them best match their application specifications, said Bourns.

The PPTC models are constructed using a proprietary blend of high-melting-point polymer materials and carbon-based conductive fillers to achieve high reliability overcurrent protection performance tailored for high temperature environments, said Bourns.

They also offer increased protection from solvents, providing higher resistance to commonly found oils, lubricants, and solvents that can cause adverse effects to consumer-grade PTCs often used in industrial and transportation applications. Solvents can cause resistance drift in a variety of polymer-based resistive components including PPTCs, which could generate nuisance tripping by the PPTC because less current is required to trip the device, said Bourns.

The Multifuse MF-MSHT polymer PTC model series is available now. The devices are UL, TÜV, and RoHS compliant, and are manufactured in a Bourns IATF 16949 certified facility.
