Designed to improve the sound quality of internal speakers in consumer devices such as smartphones, tablets, and gaming devices, Cirrus Logic has launched its newest flagship CS35L45 boosted amplifier for a more immersive audio experience. The chip incorporates a mono 6.8-W Class D amplifier with low noise and quiescent power consumption and a digitally-controlled Class H inductive boost converter that is capable of boosting battery voltages up to 15 V with an integrated digital signal processor (DSP) with audio enhancement and speaker protection algorithms.
The CS35L45 smart power amp claims higher excursion for high-peak loudness, improved dynamic range for more bass precision, less noise and audible artifacts, and more tonal balance at all volume levels, which the company said, will enable “mobile device manufacturers to push audio performance to new industry benchmarks.”
The 15-V smart boosted Class D audio amplifier with an integrated DSP can be incorporated into a stereo or multi-speaker playback solution for high-end mobile devices, or in mid-tier devices to improve performance without upgrading the device’s speakers. Key features include speaker protection and adaptive battery management that drive higher output power in all battery conditions. This results in up to a 30 percent higher peak loudness compared to Cirrus Logic’s previous generation boosted amplifier, said the company.
A recent user survey, conducted by SAR Insight & Consulting for Cirrus Logic, found that 40 percent of consumers have increased their use of speaker mode over the past 12 months. This is driven by more people working at home during the pandemic, using their smartphone speakers to watch videos, participate in video calls, and listen to music and podcasts, driving the need for better audio quality.
Three of the key improvements in the new smart power amp is higher loudness, improved dynamic range, and longer battery life. The CS35L45 features 7-W output power capability and 15-V overboost to enable higher peak power at all frequencies for more tonal balance at all volume levels, better dynamics, and more spatial range and timbre, according to Cirrus Logic.
The “system aware” CS35L45 has a built-in battery current and voltage monitoring that delivers high output power only when required to reproduce the source audio content. The amp’s proprietary adaptive battery management technology protects the battery while ensuring audio performance with no audible artifacts, while more accurate speaker protection algorithms push speakers to their maximum limits.
In addition, the chip’s Y-bridge output driver allows for higher efficiency in receiver and speaker modes for longer battery life. This is combined with on-chip DSP firmware features that include equalization and psychoacoustic enhancements that maximize performance in small speakers. Together, these features enable audio designers to deliver the acoustic performance in stereo smartphones that approach the loudness and sound quality of portable speakers without trade-offs in battery power, according to the company.
The Cirrus Logic CS35L45 smart boosted amplifier is available in production volumes in a commercial-grade 0.4-mm pitch, 36-ball wafer-level chip scale package. The operating temperature range is from 40°C to 85°C.
