Upgrading automotive positioning accuracy, STMicroelectronics has claimed the industry’s first automotive-qualified single-chip global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver with an integrated triple-band positioning measurement engine, in addition to standard multi-band Position-Velocity-Time (PVT) and dead-reckoning. Reportedly delivering the first automotive satellite-navigation chip with high-accuracy position data required by advanced driving systems, the STA8135GA, a new part in ST’s Teseo V family, helps driver-assistance systems make accurate decisions about the road ahead.
Until now triple band has only been available in larger and more expensive chipsets or modules than ST’s single-chip solution, according to the company. “Triple band has historically been used in professional applications such as surveying, mapping, and precision agriculture that demand millimeter accuracy with minimal reliance on correction data.”
Triple-band enables the receiver to acquire and track the largest number of satellites in multiple constellations simultaneously, which delivers improved performance in difficult conditions such as in urban canyons and under tree cover.
ST’s new multi-constellation receiver delivers the raw information to the host system to run any precise-positioning algorithm, such as PPP/RTK (precise point positioning/real-time kinematic). It offers 80 tracking channels and four fast acquisition channels and can track satellites in GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and NAVIC/IRNSS constellations in L1, L2, L5, and E6 frequency bands. In addition, the triple- band single-package solution features antenna sensing, a PPS output, and a notch filter for anti-jamming as well as code phase, carrier phase and doppler frequency measurement.
The STA8135GA also integrates separate low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulators on-chip to supply the IC’s analog circuitry, digital core, and I/O transceivers, which helps simplify the selection of the external power supply, said STMicroelectronics.
The STA8135GA also can improve the performance of in-dash navigation systems, telematics equipment, smart antennas, and V2X communication systems, as well as marine navigation systems, drones, and other vehicles.
Samples are available now for the STA8135GA, housed in a 7 × 11 × 1.2-mm BGA package. Full qualification to AEC-Q100 and start of production are scheduled in the first quarter of 2022.
