Bourns expands line of LAN transformers for Ethernet networks

Bourns has expanded its portfolio of 10/100/1000 Base-T and shielded GbE/PoE+ LAN transformers with advanced features.

Bourns, Inc. has expanded its portfolio of LAN transformers with the addition of two low-profile, shielded Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) series and an 10/100/1000 Base-T Chip-LAN transformer. The two GbE Chip-LAN transformers, targeting high-speed telecom and networking devices, support Ethernet speeds up to 10 Gbits/s with PoE+ capabilities and the 10/100/1000 Base-T Chip LAN transformer targets EMI suppression in Ethernet-based applications.

The GbE Chip-LAN transformer Model SM453230-121N7YP and Model SM453230-231N7YP are designed to give designers additional PCB layout flexibility thanks to their small size and low profile. The LAN transformers support high network speeds up to 10 Gbits/s and are capable of 700 mA for PoE+. They provide 1500 VAC/60 s Hi-Pot isolation and withstanding pulse voltages of up to 2400 V, 1.2/50 μs. The operating temperature range is –40°C to 85°C.

The two transformers offer different inductance, insertion loss, and capacitance values due to the different bit rate ranges they address. Model SM453230-231N7YP supports 1-, 2.5-, and 5-GbE, while Model SM453230-121N7YP is 10-GbE capable. The former can be paired with Bourns’ Model SRF2012-900YA common-mode chip inductor, and the latter with Model SRF2012A-801Y.

Also designed for PCB layout flexibility with its low profile, the automotive-grade Model SM453229A-381N7Y 10/100/1000 Base-T Chip-LAN transformer series targets 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet networks, industrial single-pair Ethernet, and IEEE 802.3 Ethernet-based applications. The LAN transformer also can be paired with common-mode chip inductors for EMI suppression.

The SM453229A-381N7Y 10/100/1000 Base-T Chip-LAN transformer is AEC-Q200 compliant, featuring an expanded temperature range of –40°C to 105°C. The LAN transformer is capable of Hi-Pot isolation of 1500 VAC/60 s, and can withstand pulse voltages of up to 2400 V, 1.2/50 μs.

All of these new devices are center-tapped transformers that are wound on a drum core and capped with a ferrite plate to emulate the close magnetic path of a toroid core, said Bourns. Helping to reduce EMI troubleshooting, the center tap allows for common-mode suppression even without an extra common mode filter, added the company.

Model SM453230-121N7YP and SM453230-231N7YP GbE Chip-LAN transformers and the SM453229A-381N7Y 10/100/1000 Base-T Chip-LAN transformer are available now. All devices are RoHS compliant and halogen free.
